Johann Lamont : Biography

Johann has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament for the constituency of Glasgow Pollok since 1999.

She was elected as the Labour and Co-operative candidate.

She served as Deputy Minister for Communities from October 2004 until November 2006 and as Deputy Minister for Justice from November 2006 until dissolution.

Born in Glasgow in 1957, into a Gaelic speaking family from Tiree, Johann Lamont attended Woodside Secondary School.

She obtained MA (Hons) at the University of Glasgow and a Post Grad teaching qualification at Jordanhill College of Education.

She also gained a Certificate of Guidance at Strathclyde University. 

Johann has served on the Equal Opportunities Committee, the Local Government Committee, the Education Committee, the Social Justice Committee and the Communities Committee. 

Prior to being elected, Johann worked as a classroom teacher for 20 years.

Her last post was based in the Education Social Work Project in the Castlemilk area of Glasgow, and she is a member of the EIS.  

Johann joined the Labour Party as a student and served on the party's Scottish Executive for a number of years, eventually becoming Chairperson of the Scottish Labour Party in 1993.  

Johann is a supporter of Oxfam and Amnesty International.  

Johann Lamont is married and has 2 young children, a son and a daughter.

In her free time she takes part in half marathons, and listens to country music: "The more mawkish the better".
